Guilford’s Stories
Twelve Historical Essays: Introduction
Welcome to Guilford… Nearly four centuries of history line its shaded streets and follow the rivers that stretch down to the shoreline of Long Island Sound. Guilford bears a fascinating history of sachems and sailors, colonists and quarrymen, patriots and poets. The broad outline of that history may be found in the essays that follow. The details, however, lie elsewhere. They abound on every street corner and trailhead. They come to life in a stroll about the Green or a visit to one of our five historic museums. While we hope this kiosk and the information it contains helps orient you to the treasures our community holds, we encourage you to go forth and explore those treasures for yourself.
